I will begin this second project by doing some thorough research on what an ‘Autonomous Vehicle’ actually is and what problems there might be that are currently surrounding them.

Autonomous Vehicles

An autonomous vehicle is known as a self-driving car or a driverless vehicle, They are vehicles that have built in sensors, cameras, and AI software that enables it to navigate and work without human control pretty much. The vehicles are designed to sense the environment and make decisions to drive safely in certain traffic conditions.

There are three different kinds of Autonomous vehicles which are based off of levels, A level 0 Autonomous vehicle has no automation at all and is pretty much. your every day manual car, however with a level 5 one it is completely automated and needs no type of driver intervention at all. The other level ranks from 1-4 and they are types in which some human control will be needed but also not needed at times.

The current Autonomous vehicle that is closest to reaching level 5 would be Googles self driving car called ‘Waymo’, it is currently ranked at a level 4. After ‘Waymo’ would be the ‘Tesla’ who are ranked in level 2-3.

How do they work?

Autonomous vehicles takes all of its data from its sensors and combines it to get a clear picture of what's happening around it. This helps the car understand where it is and what's nearby, like other cars, people, and obstacles.

Autonomous cars have backup systems in case something goes wrong. If one sensor fails, another sensor can take over the role that it had. If there’s a problem, the car can stop itself to stay safe. Once the vehicle has a good idea of the environment, it needs to show its own position within the space. Using data from a gps, along with information from maps and the sensors involved, the car can find itself on the road, knowing exactly where it is.

How do passengers control them?

Passengers in an autonomous vehicle (AV) control it differently than in a regular car. Instead of steering, braking, or accelerating, they interact with the car through simple commands and settings.

Most autonomous vehicles have a touchscreen or a control part inside the car. Passengers can use it to be able to enter destinations by typing in or speaking where they want to go. Aswell as being able to adjust the route if they want to take a different path.

Some vehicles allow passengers to play with settings like the speed, air conditioning or heating, and entertainment options. This can be done through the onboard system or even the an app.
