Point, Line, Plane

In my first week of interaction design i began to learn the designing technique of “Point, line, plane” There are six different ways in which you can choose too display a point or points, with these being: Reflect, Multiply, Disperse, Proximity, Scale, Dominance.

And these are the four ways in which i could choose demonstrate the lines in the sequence, rhythm, frequency, symmetry or asymmetry.

Before i get into any form of practical work i want to first research what exactly the point, line, plane sequence is.

Research

I firstly came across a pdf for a 2D Design Basics unit and found some helpful and strong information on Point, line, plane.

“Points, lines, and planes are the basic building blocks of design. From these elements, designers create images, icons, textures, patterns, diagrams, animations, and typographic systems. In this lesson, students will learn to identify these basic design elements in art and design, apply them to expressive compositions, and critically evaluate one another’s use of points, lines, and planes to communicate visually.”

Im now going to make a quick mind map in Miro and try and find some examples of what i could find any-form of point, line, plane in any type of work.

I came up with four main categories with them being, Movies/TV, Gaming, Sport and Music/Album and song covers. With each of those being ever-growing industries i think i should be able to find some pretty good examples.

I started off with looking into the covers of some albums and bands and the first one that i came across was of ‘Joy Divisions, Unknown Pleasures’

As you can see this cover features a-lot of lines in a frequency type design which is something that i have been asked to design myself so it is good to see a strong example of this being used, another strong example of this technique being used is in this album cover,

This album art is off of a personal favourite album of mine called ‘AM by the Arctic Monkeys’ and again in this design you can see the frequency effect within all of the lines and with them showing the albums name in the very centre of the cover through the effect which i though was quite cool.

And here is an album cover featuring a repetitive amount of ‘points’

Untitled

Again quite a cool design to an album cover featuring 9 points and all of them filled with their own unique design.
