Speculative Design Process

This week’s lecture focused on speculative design and how it is used. We explored this topic during second year but todays lecture revisited the subject by considering how technology, society, and design have developed since then. Speculative design focuses on exploring different possibilities for the future, including what is possible, plausible, probable, and preferable.

How To Use Speculative Design

Speculative design can be practised by identifying a potential future concern and using “What if?” questions to explore different outcomes. This approach allows designers to question emerging technologies and then for them to consider how they could be used.

It is important to explore a wide range of questions, including both the positive and negative possibilities. By considering the benefits, risks, ethical concerns, and wider social impacts, speculative design can help create a more balanced view of potential futures.

Zeitgeist 2050 Project

For this weeks group project it is based again on the ‘Zeitgeist’ with last weeks one being based off the present day, this one is based on the year 2050.

The general idea of this weeks project was to imagine a world in 2050 and come up with any idea that could potentially be real in 24 years time.

We came up with some general sports ideas with one of them being holographic/virtual referees in all kinds of sports. The reason we came up with this is due to some Referee's often getting in the way of play in some particular sports and also at times making the wrong decision which then leads to all sorts of bad behaviour from fans etc.

The idea that we eventually decided on was to have a new style of contact lens which records all first person movement from the athlete who is wearing them, followed with a futuristic styled screen which dials in to whatever is being broadcasted on the lens so you are able to see every possible angle that a certain player of athlete will say while performing.

Conclusion

I thought again that todays project work was interesting, i liked spending time thinking on what could be to come digitally in the next 25 years and the whole idea around that. There really is no way of telling or even properly knowing what is to come by 2050 so it is good to try and make starts on that.
