In class this week we continued by looking on with different ways in which your work could be laid out and presented through the use of different charts and graphs.

Charles Joseph Minard

The person that we looked into was Charles Joseph Minard, he was a French civil engineer and involved in the field of information graphics. He is best known for his visualisation of Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812. It is referred to as "Minard's map," and it is considered to be one of the greatest graphical representations of statistic data ever created.

The map shows Napoleon's army as it advanced into Russia in 1812 and then retreated in 1813. The map illustrates the size of Napoleon's army at different points, as well as the temperature and direction of travel.

London Underground Map

The map is a good example of data visualisation. It was designed by Harry Beck who was an engineering draftsman in 1931. His design had revolutionised the way subway maps are presented. Different subway lines are represented by different colours, making it easy for passengers to identify which line and stop they need to take. This colour coded system helps in quick use of the network, especially for those unfamiliar with the system.

My Thoughts

I again thought that this weeks lecture was interesting, i liked finding out about the two graphs above especially. I was always fascinated by the style and representation of the London tube map and first looking at it it looks like a mess but i think it is actually very smart.
