This weeks lecture was spent discussing and working with narration and storytelling in design. This is actually quite a good way to help you with the idea generation part of whatever project you could be doing.

Storytelling

As designers, our job isn't just to fix problems, we should also connect with users by guiding them through a story. Since we were younger we've been drawn to stories, whether we’re listening or telling them ourselves. Storytelling helps make experiences more engaging and relatable. Many stories follow a simple 3-part structure, like the one shown in Freytag’s Pyramid.

The Hero’s Journey

In most stories, the main character goes on a journey that follows an arc they begin in their everyday world, face challenges in a new or unfamiliar world, and then return changed.

In UX design, the user is the hero. We guide them through a journey where their problem is solved and their goal is achieved. By using UX techniques and putting ourselves in their shoes, we can understand what they're struggling with. Then we design a solution that helps them, using storytelling to follow the familiar 3-part structure along the way.

7 Plot Points

Every story typically follows 7 main points throughout, Apps and websites also use this system so they can get across the usability and function of their product. This is so it can help to engage the user more, and people remember things better if they were emotionally engaged.

Reflection

I thought that this lecture was quite interesting, as i found out another good way to help with idea generating with a project, through using storyboards. This is so you can get a good idea of what the user would typically want and how you can make it more engaging for them as they work through the process.
